Project managers and Bedrok
Whenever I pitched the concept of Bedrok to people, whether strangers or friends and family, they always mentioned that, if you want to have a massive project completed by a lot of freelancers in a short period of time, you’d need a project manager. Now that I’ve gone through the first test of Bedrok, I can see how this makes sense.
Even in a simple logo design, the other designer was expecting me to lead the process. I came up with how we were going to execute, what the time frame was going to look like, how many iterations we were going to do, etc… But I’m not sure if I could have done that in a vacuum if I hadn’t also been the one to talk to the client in the first place.
I was responsible for figuring out their needs so I could determine scope of project, so I could make an offer. And I’m wondering if that will also have to be the role of the project manager moving forward. Or could that be someone else’s role in the company? Someone to simply determining price of projects.
All signs point to it being difficult to scale profitably. Whatever profit could be made ends up going to project managers as payment for managing the project.
This is where it’ll be important to stress test the business model canvas, especially the revenue streams portion. Maybe my client target audience is project managers, and we give them the tools they need to properly utilize a massive freelance team. Like renting a super car. Except this engine could be 100 freelancers.
